THE CAPTIVATING GLANCE
The six main holy cities of India have undoubtedly defined my work in the STARING series where I tried not to fall in the stereotypes that characterize so many photographic works of this country. As a quiet observer I tried to shape the greatness of the incomprehensible collective intelligence of these people with the amazing energy, mystery and simplicity of their lives. The captivating glance has been the cause overarching element in the STARING series.
The strange mechanism by which the society of castes works, the mystical devotion of the people and the magic of gurus provide an oversized experience to the visitor. Water is another key element of the work. It is one of the sacred elements for daily life and death in India, its omnipresence from the Ganges to the Monsoon, is essential to give testimony. In the MISCELANEOUS series I try to pick up a larger range of pictures such as professions. The ‘arrantzales’ fishermen of the Great Sun, the life of a ‘autorickshaw’ widow driver in the sexist Indian society or the nomad communities from Bangladesh are examples reflected in this collection.
A SIMPLE OBSERVER
LOADING images show people using their body as the only working engine for loading goods or people with a tremendous effort. It is always difficult for a foreigner to deeply understand in such a short notice different cultures and countries and my approach has been discrete, trying to be a simple observer, nonintrusive and transparent, just in some cases having an ephemeral relation of confidence.
